classical ethical theories

In this course, we look at classical ethical theories of utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. We also examine different perspectives on ethical issues introduced by relativism, ethical egoism, and emotivism. For this paper, you will apply these theories and perspectives to a current issue, selected from the list of issues below.

Choose one of the ethical issues from the list to research and write about. It is recommended that you choose a topic that you are familiar with or that you have thought about previously, if possible. For example, you might choose an issue that either worries you or enrages you, you might choose one that you have worked on, or you might choose one that relates to recent events in your community.

Possible Issues

  • Corporate executive compensation
  • Corporate contributions to political campaigns
  • Affirmative action
  • The media and its responsibilities
  • Domestic surveillance
  • Whistle blowing in government or in a business
  • Religion in the workplace
  • Pornography
  • Consumer tracking
  • Ethical problems of gambling
  • Progressive taxation rates
  • Immigration
  • Women’s equality

In your paper, you will apply the ethical theories and perspectives to the issue that you select. You do not have to use all six, but you should apply at least two ethical theories and at least one ethical perspective in your paper. Make sure that you write primarily on ethical topics and concepts; do not get distracted by doing analyses that apply political, economic, religious, or legal perspectives. Describe, compare, and apply the ethical theories and perspectives to the topics. Explain how the theories and perspectives would analyze the issue. What are the ethical issues? Where are there breaches of ethical behavior? How could each theory help us think about what would constitute virtuous or ethical behavior?

Your draft must include at least three pages of text, plus a title page and a reference page. Your draft should include a clear thesis statement that states what you plan to argue. Also, include a list of the resources you intend to use. Format your rough draft according to APA (6th edition) style and properly cite and reference all your resources, using APA format. If you would like to refer to APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, within the Learning Resources tab in the left navigation bar.

criminal justice

Interview 3 criminal justice professionals from different areas of the criminal justice field in your local jurisdiction. Make sure you obtain the following information.

  • The name of the interviewee
  • The name of the interviewee’s department
  • The interviewee’s specific interests in becoming the criminal justice professional that he or she is (this could vary depending upon the interviewee’s response)
  • The interviewee’s department hiring requirements, for example initial testing, physical agility, background investigation (including the length of time for completion), or medical and psychological testing
  • The interviewee’s description of what and where his or her initial training took place (i.e., police academy or related training facility)
  • How long the training lasted
  • The interviewee’s department’s probationary time and successful completion requirements

In essay format, write a report that includes the above information and focuses on the following as well:

  • How the interviewee became interested in his or her particular field of criminal justice
  • The career inquires he or she made that led them to his or her job position
  • The hiring process that he or she had to partake in and the training required once hired
  • The probationary time required for successful completion of his or training
  • A critique of their descriptions and brief comparison of differences in job requirements

environmental issues

Do you feel that scientists should be cut out of the policy making process, particularly on environmental issues, when their research is proven and widely accepted and is being ignored and disputed? Politicians ultimately make the decisions, but shouldn’t the scientists have a voice?

Do you feel that lobbyists and special interest groups exert too great of an influence and act as an impediment to finding solutions to, and providing the funding for, research for the environmental problems we face?

religious beliefs

Scholars conclude that what we ordinarily call religion manifests to some degree the following eight elements: 1) a belief system; 2) community; 3) central myths; 4) rituals; 5) an ethical system; 6) emotional experiences; 7) material expressions of religion; and 8) sacredness.

Examine to what extent your religious beliefs fall into this pattern. Do some elements have more weight than others? If some of these 8 factors do not appear to apply, briefly acknowledge this and state why they do not. If you do not have a belief system, interview someone who does and examine their belief system, or choose one you yourself are curious about.

If you wish as a creative essay option: Compare childhood understanding of a religious tradition you’ve been raised in or heard about with what you learn by applying Molloy’s eight-step analysis of a belief system to it as an adult.

Provide enough details to support your answer. The emphasis here should be on your own words, not the research of others. Look at our textbook for excellent resources on major religions, both East and West.

This essay should be 3 full pages (double-spaced, standard fonts and APA format; no title page necessary; 1050 words) in length.

All papers are expected to follow APA guidelines for documentation. Follow Academic Integrity Policy + 80/20 Written Work Guidelines in Announcements
